  • Size varies by species:

    • Body length: 70–130 cm (28–51 in)

    • Weight: 8–30 kg (18–66 lbs)

  • Thick fur, often spotted or streaked.

  • Distinctive black tufts of hair on ear tips and ruffs of fur around the face.

  • Large paws with fur between toes, acting like natural snowshoes.

3. Habitat and Range

  • Found in forests, taiga, mountainous areas, and shrublands.

  • Eurasian lynx ranges widely across Europe and Asia.

  • Canada lynx lives mostly in boreal forests of Canada and northern U.S.

  • Iberian lynx is native to southwestern Spain and Portugal, one of the rarest cats in the world.

  • Bobcats are widespread across southern Canada, most of the U.S., and northern Mexico.

4. Social Life and Behaviour

  • Mostly solitary and territorial.

  • Active mainly at dawn and dusk (crepuscular), but can hunt at night or daytime.

  • Use scent marking and vocalizations to communicate.

  • Excellent hunters relying on stealth and short bursts of speed.

5. Diet

  • Carnivorous, specializing in small to medium-sized mammals and birds.

  • Canada lynx primarily prey on snowshoe hares.

  • Eurasian lynx can take larger prey like deer.

  • Also hunt rodents, birds, and sometimes livestock.

6. Role in the Ecosystem

  • Control populations of prey species, especially rabbits and hares.

  • Help maintain balanced ecosystems by regulating herbivore numbers.

7. Relationship with Humans

  • Historically hunted for fur.

  • Conservation efforts are ongoing, especially for the Iberian lynx, which was once critically endangered.

  • Occasionally cause conflicts when preying on domestic animals.

  • Symbol of wilderness and stealth in various cultures.

8. Fun Fact

  • Lynx have exceptional night vision and hearing, making them superb nocturnal hunters in dense forests and snowy environments.

plant (SPADE/CLUBS)

Dandelion Greens

Type: Perennial herb in the Asteraceae (daisy) family.
Needles: No true needles; has deeply lobed, toothed green leaves.
Lifespan: Lives several years, with roots often surviving through winter.
Habitat: Found worldwide in lawns, meadows, roadsides, and disturbed soils.
Uses: Edible leaves for salads, teas, and cooking; roots used in herbal medicine and coffee substitutes.
Adaptations: Taproot stores nutrients to survive drought and cold; seeds adapted for wind dispersal.
Ecological role: Provides early spring nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators.
Fun fact: Every part of the dandelion is edible, and it has been called “the perfect wild salad plant” due to its nutrient-rich greens.

Poison Hemlock

Type: Biennial herbaceous plant in the carrot family (Apiaceae).
Needles: Does not have needles; has finely divided, fern-like leaves.
Lifespan: Biennial—typically grows vegetatively the first year and flowers the second year before dying.
Habitat: Prefers moist, disturbed soils, roadsides, riverbanks, and pastures; native to Europe and North Africa but widely naturalized elsewhere.
Uses: Historically used in small, controlled doses in medicine, but all parts are highly toxic; no safe culinary use.
Adaptations: Rapid growth and prolific seed production help it colonize disturbed areas; toxic compounds deter herbivores.
Ecological role: Provides cover for insects and small wildlife; however, it is often considered invasive and can outcompete native plants.
Fun fact: Poison hemlock contains potent alkaloids like coniine, which was famously used to execute Socrates in ancient Greece.
