MAJOR GANG

Canadian Goose

1. Species and Family

  • Common Name: Canada Goose

  • Scientific Name: Branta canadensis

  • Family: Anatidae (ducks, geese, and swans)

  • Known for its distinctive honking calls and V-shaped flight formations during migration.

2. Appearance

  • Large waterfowl, 30–43 inches (75–110 cm) long, wingspan 50–70 inches (127–178 cm).

  • Weight: 6–14 lbs (2.7–6.4 kg).

  • Distinctive black head and neck, white cheek patches, and brown-gray body.

  • Both males and females look alike, though males are slightly larger.

3. Habitat and Range

  • Native to North America, widely found across Canada, the United States, and northern Mexico.

  • Some populations migrate as far as the Arctic in summer and the southern U.S./Mexico in winter.

  • Live near lakes, rivers, marshes, parks, and golf courses — adaptable to wild and urban environments.

4. Social Life and Behaviour

  • Highly social, forming flocks outside breeding season.

  • Usually monogamous for life; both parents care for goslings.

  • Known for strong family bonds and group migration in V-shaped formations to conserve energy.

5. Diet

  • Herbivorous: feed mainly on grasses, grains, seeds, aquatic vegetation, and berries.

  • Occasionally eat small insects or crustaceans.

  • Often graze on land but will also dabble in shallow water.

6. Role in the Ecosystem

  • Help disperse plant seeds through droppings.

  • Provide food for predators like foxes, coyotes, and eagles.

  • Their grazing can influence wetland vegetation growth.

7. Relationship with Humans

  • Popular for birdwatching and hunting, but also controversial in cities due to droppings, noise, and aggressive nesting behavior.

  • Some urban populations no longer migrate because of year-round food availability.

8. Fun Fact

  • Canada Geese have excellent navigation skills — they can return to the exact same nesting spot year after year, even after migrating thousands of miles.
